we have learned from our first failed garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Deciding to plant a garden was one of the first steps we took towards becoming more self-sufficient.\u00a0 It is one of the easiest ways to start.\u00a0 All you need is dirt, seeds, water, and somewhere to put it.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have a lot of land, you can garden in pots.\u00a0 Our first garden has failed in giving us veggies for the entire winter.\u00a0 We were left with a completely barren garden.\u00a0 We had some fresh veggies to eat on, but nothing like what we were expecting\/hoping for.\u00a0 And the radishes were inedible for us (so strong), but they did fantastic.\u00a0 But we have learned from our mistakes and are working for solutions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:200}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Prepare the ground better \u2013 poor Aaron went over the ground several times, but it just wasn\u2019t enough for our root veggies that need to grow.\u00a0 We are planning on investing in a larger machine that will help him toil the soil better.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:200}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Didn\u2019t plant early enough \u2013 we thought we were being so smart, saving money buying from seed catalogs.\u00a0 We planted about 1 \u00bd months <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">later than we should have.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our potatoes didn\u2019t have any real chance to grow because of when we planted them.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 And then the rain started and didn\u2019t stop.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:200}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Didn\u2019t define the garden edges well \u2013 when the grass started to grow, when it was raining every single day it became difficult to tell where our crops were under the tall grass.\u00a0 My plan (not ingenious at all, but it will work) is to take large round straight sticks and maybe small trees from the woods around our house and lay them around the garden.\u00a0 Someone would have to walk up to our garden to even see it, so while it won\u2019t be pretty, it will be cheap and easy.\u00a0 If you want pretty, pavers or treated wood would make a good edger for a garden.\u00a0 I just want new potatoes, the garden doesn\u2019t have to pretty.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:200}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rain, rain, rain \u2013 there isn\u2019t much we can do about this but it definitely hindered our garden.\u00a0 It was never dry enough and everything was waterlogged.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We chose a large flattish area of our yard at the top of a hill.\u00a0 We thought it would be great for drainage, but we just had so much rain.\u00a0 We are still working on a solution to this.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:200}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Deer \u2013 our local wildlife was pr<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">obably our biggest issue.\u00a0 They ate all my beans, the tops of every Jerusalem artichoke, and the tops off our first sunflowers.\u00a0 Irish Spring soap didn\u2019t work at all.\u00a0 The motion detecting flashing red light didn\u2019t work.\u00a0 We sighed in frustration because the only solution we had at the time was to sit in the garden 24\/7.\u00a0 But through the frustration and much research, Aaron has found a possible solution to our issues.\u00a0 A motion detecting water sprinkler system.\u00a0 We are hoping that this is going to fix our issue, but this is the plan for next year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span
