We Stopped Driving to Aldi and Cut Our Bill to $250 a Month | This Is the 5-Step Ad System We Use
Saving money on groceries, frugal living, and grocery savings — those three things run our kitchen. Our grocery bill sits at $250 a month for a family of 3 on one income, and we don’t drive to a lot of stores to do it.
I’m Julia from The Canny Couple. For years I was convinced the cheapest pantry meant driving out of my way to a different stores. Then I figured out I could do the exact same thing at my own local grocery stores — by reading the ad and buying at the right time.
Here are the 5 things I do with the store ad before I ever walk in:
1. Scout the loss leaders first — and only the ones we actually eat
2. Spot a fake sale with a price book (chocolate chips at $3.29 is a buy; $4.79 is the normal sale price)
3. Use the sales cycle instead of chasing it — 40 cents a box on mac and cheese adds up
4. Read the fine print. “3 for free” usually means you have to buy 5, or you pay full price on all of them
5. Build the list from the ad at home — never standing in the aisle holding the ad
Simple, unglamorous stuff. It’s also the entire reason our monthly grocery budget holds at $250 instead of drifting back toward $350.
